Director of the department of comparative biomedical sciences of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (the Veneto experimental zoo-prophylactic institute) in Legnaro, Padua. The department hosts the national reference centre; FAO, the United Nations food and agricultural organization; the world organization for animal health for avian influenza and Newcastle illness; the national centres for collaboration and reference for scientific research into infective illnesses between humans and animals; and the FAO’s reference centre for rabies. As a result of launching GISAID, an international network for online collaboration for the genetic data of the avian flu virus, Ilaria Capua was awarded the Scientific American 50 prize by the magazine of the same name, and the Revolutionary Mind prize awarded by the American magazine “Seed”. She is involved with scientific research into animal health for the European Commission.
