Sergio Chiamparino has been mayor of Turin since 2001.
He was born in 1948 in Moncalieri, Turin, and graduated in political science from Turin university where he has been a researcher until 1975, the year in which he became involved in politics. Until 1988 he was an important member of the Italian communist party while, from 1989 to 1991, he was general secretary of the CGIL union and, from 1991 to 1995, provincial secretary of the PDS party.
Since 9 May 2008 he has been shadow minister for federal reform for the PD party. Currently, apart from being mayor of Turin, he is national president of ANCI and coordinator for the mayors of the metropolitan cities.
